You bring up a tricky distinction.

I recently did some research on sex education in schools. And I was horrified at the religious dogma I found seeping into sex education programs. The abstinence-only programs primarily teach that it is a sin to have sex before marriage. I found one abstinence-only sex-ed program that preached that girls who have sex before marriage are a "chewed up piece of gum." (The boys were the chewers.)

Many religions (not all) fully indoctrinate kids into this notion that gender equality is another term for female domination. Teaching young boys that females subjugate males through their sexuality is the same dangerous ideologies taught in the incel groups. All of it has one intent - to dehumanize and marginalize women.

When religion goes too far (as in Long's case), it becomes a cult that peddles shame. He (claimed) to have killed those women due to the shame he felt. It's the same shame the incels feel because they are ostracized by society.

If religion is the opiate of the masses, then shame is the field they grow those poppies.

This is why we must get better sex education programs in schools. Kids do not get a healthy sense of their sexuality through religion...and then they turn to these incel groups.

We have a chicken/egg problem here.

Thanks for your comment. I gave it extra claps so it will rise to the top of this comment thread. This is a subject we need to discuss.
