Nothing you learn in school prepares you for marriage. There aren’t any “how to choose the right partner, so you don’t mess up your life and your children’s lives” classes. Sure, there are self-help books and therapists to help you get better at it, but you are otherwise on your own.

Now imagine if your doctors removed your gallbladder without going to medical school first. It probably would not end well. So why do we insist surgeons work so many hours before they can wield a knife but allow callow, immature people to handle our hearts?

There’s only one act that teaches you how to get better at the act of love — loving others. And like most skills, to become a virtuoso, you must spend hours and hours practicing, failing, and practicing more before you become an expert.

But how many hours? How do you know when you have enough experience to find real love?

The 10,000-Hour Rule
