It was February 25, 2022 — the second night of Russia’s full-scale invasion. Kyiv trembled under the thunder of missiles. Explosions shattered windows, car alarms howled into the freezing air, and the streets smelled of burning rubber and gunpowder. Ukrainian soldiers had taken defensive positions in the city, some crouching behind sandbags, others gripping their rifles with white-knuckled determination. The sky flickered orange as Russian forces bombarded the outskirts.
Somewhere in a hidden government compound, advisors begged Zelensky to evacuate. The Americans had offered him a flight to safety. The odds were clear: Russia had one of the largest armies in the world, and Kyiv was expected to fall within days, if not hours.
Zelensky stood firm. His breath curled in the cold air, his face illuminated by the dim glow of his phone as he hit “record.” At that moment, there was no presidential podium, no staged backdrop — just him and his men, standing in the dark streets of Kyiv, streetlamps flickering above them.
