Ted Williams’ Head
His legacy may someday live on…
Having your frozen, severed head suspended upside down on top of a can of Bumble Bee Tuna is probably not the most dignified way to end your life. Yet, according to the employees of the Alcor Life Extension Foundation, this story does have a happy ending.
It just has yet to be written.
The frozen, severed head belonged to Theodore Samuel “Ted” Williams, otherwise known as “Teddy Ballgame,” “The Kid,” and “The Greatest Hitter Who Ever Lived.”
At first glance, Ted Williams may seem…well, somewhat dead. But Ted Williams is far from dead.
According to the employees of Alcor (known as “Alcorians”), he is merely done with his “First Lifecycle.” That’s right. Teddy Ballgame is just waiting to make one last comeback or, in Alcorian speak, “reanimate” through Cryonics.
Cryonics is the technique used to store body parts at extremely low temperatures. The hope is that people will eventually be brought back to life through stem cell re-growth. It’s like having a Chia Pet, except instead of growing vegetation hair, people will someday sprout new bodies from their heads.
That might sound crazy, but it is far from illogical for Alcorians. They believe so strongly in Cryonics that each client is referred to as a “patient”…
